I love strength and conditioning!

This week I have not been doing a lot of swim/bike/run, but I have gotten in my twice-weekly strength and conditioning workouts, which are always great fun for me.  I’m currently working out with Nate two mornings a week for 30 minutes each morning.  As I did during IronMonth, I either run or bike over to the gym (almost a mile and a half each way), we work out for a half-hour, and then I bike or run back home before leaving on my daily bike commute to the office.

A lot of triathletes do not strength train for fear of adding bulk, which is a legitimate concern, given that triathletes want to optimize their strength to weight ratio.  However, there are a lot of benefits to be gained from strength training, particularly given that many of us have muscle imbalances, or lack stability and strength.  Muscle mass also requires more calories, so strength training can really fire up one’s metabolism, which is a plus for anyone with a tendency to gain weight.  Additionally, since I got on a regular strength training program, I have had fewer injuries. I also have a lot of fun with it, because I like variety with my training, and the sense of accomplishment from building strength over time.

If you haven’t done any strength and conditioning lately, consider giving it a try!
